Comprehensive exams

A full eye exam, for every age in the family

One visit checks how clearly you see, how your eyes work together and how healthy they are, and gives you a prescription if you need one.

Dr. Villegas explains each finding in plain words and tells you when to come back. Most people have an exam every year or two. She will say what is right for you.

What the exam covers

  • How clearly you see, near and far

  • How your eyes focus and work together

  • The health of the front and back of each eye

  • A prescription, if you need one

How often

Who comes in, and when

  • Children

A child can see blurry for years without saying so. Dr. Villegas suggests a first exam before school starts, and a schedule for your child after that.

  • Adults to 64

Every year or two, or sooner when your glasses or contacts stop feeling right. The doctor sets the schedule from your eyes and your health.

  • Age 65 and over

Every year. Eye health checks matter more with age, and last year's numbers help us see what has changed.

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

A routine exam is usually billed to your vision plan. A visit for an eye problem, an eye health check or a follow-up is billed to medical insurance. Many visits mix the two, and we tell you which is which.

    How fees work
  • What to bring

    • Current glasses and contact lenses

    • Vision and medical insurance cards

    • A list of the eye drops and medicines you use

    • Sunglasses, in case your eyes are dilated

About the exam

How long does the exam take?

Plan on about an hour with the first tests. A contact lens fitting or a dilated check takes longer.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Sometimes. If they are, close work is blurry and light is bright for a few hours. Ask us before your visit if you have a long drive home, and we will plan around it.

Do you see children?

Yes. A parent or guardian books and comes to the visit.
